The response to the earthquake in Haiti is
one of the largest the world has ever seen, and coordination of
resources, personnel and aid has been challenging for many
organizations. While the desire to do more and do it faster increases,
it is imperative that we apply the wisdom of our experience. We must
exercise the necessary caution to fully assess the needs in Haiti, vet
potential partners and be deliberate as we consider how best to invest
your donations to help those affected by the disaster.
While we've provided immediate
aid--through our networks, United Way has distributed water, juice,
over-the-counter medicines, first aid products, protein bars, canned
foods and cleaning supplies--United Ways' most important role is to
assist with long-term recovery efforts. We have made an initial grant to
Project Medishare to transport medical volunteers and supplies, as well
as food and water to Haiti, and we are developing a plan for how the
balance of the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund will be invested.
Our experiences with the tsunami of 2004,
the China earthquake in 2008, and Hurricane Katrina demonstrate the
importance of engaging the people who are affected in identifying
appropriate solutions that meet their needs. In fact, the possibility
exists that this approach could help change community conditions in
Haiti and create better opportunities for people going forward.
Our expertise in convening all sectors of a
community will help the Haitian people determine long-term rebuilding
priorities, particularly in the areas of education, income and health.
This will help reestablish the educational and health infrastructure of
Haitian communities, and work to improve the income-earning potential of
Haitian families. Ongoing donations to the United Way Worldwide
Disaster Fund will go toward long-term recovery and rebuilding in Haiti,
as well as to meet the needs of Haitians affected by the disaster who
have relocated to the U.S. and throughout the Caribbean.
Thank you again for your generosity. We
will continue to keep you informed, and we invite you to read more at www.UnitedWay.org/HaitiUpdate.
